ACHOO00...ONE MISERABLE BRITISH COLD

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2011 – Bowness-on-Windemere – I haven’t felt like blogging because I have had one miserable, snotty cold and been sleeping my days away.  To recap the last few days:
On Monday  (before my cold started) we left Garstang and went to Kirby Lonsdale—seems to be castles, castles everywhere on the drive   The weather was raining hard but we got a lovely campsite outside of the town.  On Tuesday we walked down to Devil’s Bridge and saw River Loon flooded up over the banks and very torrential (Geoff says he has never seen anything like it) and we heard on the radio that some of the major and minor motorways were closed due to flooding which caused gridlock in some areas.

We crossed the old historic Devil’s Bridge and walked into Kirby Lonsdale and had tea at The Royal where we chatted with another couple visiting from New Rochelle, NY.

It poured while we had our tea then the rain stopped so we walked the cobbled streets and stopped in at a bakery and had a Florentine cookie which we ate under the awning while yet another downpour honored us!   When it let up we went to The Orange Tree pub and had lunch.   Afterwards we went to Rushkin’s viewpoint and walked around the church to see the view of the River Loon—not the usual since it was flooding the banks but still pretty.

Famous view normally--has been painted by John Turner!

We walked back through town and ran into the NY couple and Geoff told them to go to Dent on their way back to where they were staying.   We walked up to the grocery store and got provisions the headed back to camp.   Managed to get back to the RV before it started raining again.

That’s when the sore throat began and the nose started running!    Wednesday morning I convinced myself I was okay and Geoff’s friend, Pippy, who lives in the area came by and took us into the little village of Dent circa 1200s) and we had a love lunch in a little shoppe there—parsnip soup—and it was truly yummy along with the homemade wheat/nut bread!

I love the stonewalls with the top stones laying at an angle—so cool looking (Geoff laughs at me when I say that!):

Aren't these walls something?
That little cobblestoned village was very interesting—even in the light rain.  Pippy also drove us through Sedburgh on the way back to camp.  She had coffee with us then had to leave to pick up her daughters from school.  I enjoyed meeting her because Geoff has mentioned her many times and the adventures he has had since she is an ecologist and studies things like bats, newts, etc., when new building sites are proposed.

Thursday we drove to Kendal and went Asda so I could talk to the pharmacy about my cold—she advised to just let it run its course and I bought some aloe vera coated Kleenex for my poor nose!

We drove on to Bowness that is on Windemere Lake (hence the name “Bowness-on-Windemere” name) and it is a lovely little town.

I felt so poorly I slept the day away while Geoff did whatever (I think he read) and then we watched a little TV on his computer and went to bed because I felt lousy.  Friday I thought I was better but after starting the laundry, I told Geoff I had to lie down and he finished the wash while I slept for hours.  He went for a walk while I slept.   Later, after dinner I did go out and walk down to the lake to see the lake ferry and some of the boats/yachts moored here.

The lake ferry with raindrops on the lens!  :)  Cool effect!!!
I was feeling a bit better but still not so great so didn’t go into town for music at the pub.   I did watch some British comedy on the computer that was pretty funny.   I also watched the weather forecast which says we are supposed to get the results of whatever Hurricane Katia brings to northern Ireland and Great Britain—most likely rain and wind…gee, that would be something different!   LOL

I have seen sun bursts, believe it or not.   And it is very cool that we are across the lake from the Beatrix Potter National Trust Lands (she donated her property for the public to enjoy) and the bunny rabbits must hitch a ride across the lake because they are hopping around this campground all the time—lots of them!
I am much better today (Saturday) and so may trek into town later and check it out.   Just wanted to get caught up at this…it may be rainy and I may have had a bout with a cold but I am still enjoying all this English hospitality and countryside!

Love, Geoff & Sue xo

P.S.  A big "Happy Birthday" shout out to 7 year old Maris!
